Passed in 1972 as a part of Educational Amendments to the 1964 Civil Rights Act, Title IX states:
“No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.”
- Title IX is used to protect students, employees, applicants, etc. from sexual misconduct or harassment.
- It applies to academic and non-academic activities, including sports and extra-curricular programs.
- Its goal is to prohibit harassment and discrimination on the basis of sex and gender, including sexual harassment and sexual violence.
New regulation that went into effect on January 1, 2021, has created a much more extensive protocol to effectively investigate any claims of discrimination or harassment. This page has been set up to outline those protocols and help inform our community how to utilize this process when needed.
